Making Ireland more accessible through audio description

What is ADESI?

Led by Dr Lucía Pintado Gutiérrez, ADESI (Audio Description in Ireland) is a research project launched in 2025 to promote media accessibility for blind and visually impaired individuals across Ireland.

Focusing on audiovisual translation and audio description (AD), the project explores how AD is used and developed across different settings—from television and film to live events such as theatre, museums, and sports.

ADESI aims to strengthen collaboration between government bodies, broadcasters, educators, and accessibility advocates. By building bridges between the education and entertainment sectors, the project works toward a more inclusive Ireland—where accessibility is embedded in everyday practices and visually impaired audiences can fully participate in cultural and public life.

Focusing on three core areas—academic research, the entertainment industry, and user experience—the project gathers insights through surveys, interviews, and expert consultations.

While audio description remains underrepresented in Irish media and scholarship, ADESI aims to:

  • Raise awareness
  • Provide evidence-based insights
  • Promote inclusive and accessible audiovisual practices

This website acts as the project’s central hub—sharing updates, publishing research findings, and fostering dialogue around accessibility in media.
